STEM Passion grew out of a shared vision: the desire to build a future with a fair and EQUAL REPRESENTATION OF WOMEN in STEM disciplines through storytelling.
Societal transformation towards SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT, EQUITY, PEACE, and HUMAN PROGRESS, requires putting GENDER EQUALITY AT THE VERY HEART, as a FUNDAMENTAL HUMAN RIGHT and not merely a goal to aspire to. Furthermore, it necessitates drawing on the talents of all citizens, allowing every person to define themselves as a “human being”, beyond any societal expectations related to gender. Gender should be neither an advantage nor an impediment in following your own life’s journey and in finding personal fulfillment.
The inspiration for this project resulted from direct experience, but it is also based on evidence. There is a clear gender leadership gap in science, which is traditionally a male-dominated field. This situation is exacerbated by the fact that women are often stereotyped in traditional and digital media. As a result, the potential of women is often not fully realized. Social, economic, and political inequalities persist on a global level and are strongly rooted in society. Therefore, we wish to contribute to the creation of a more inclusive environment where future generations can grow up, with fairness, collaboration, and gender equality in mind.
By celebrating the scientific excellence of women, STEM Passion aligns with the UNITED NATIONS’ SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT GOAL N. 5, which aims to achieve GENDER EQUALITY and empower all women and girls. In this context, WOMEN’S EMPOWERMENT can be viewed as fostering GREATER STRENGTH, SELF-ESTEEM, and AWARENESS OF ONE’S OWN POTENTIAL.
The project intends to have a social impact on future generations of women, in line with NEXTGen EU, providing young women with successful FEMALE ROLE MODELS as a source of inspiration, thereby defeating gender stereotypes.
We wish to influence personal and educational choices by changing beliefs, raising aspirations, and encouraging girls and young women to explore STEM career paths. The purpose is to encourage girls to acquire the NECESSARY SKILLS TO DRIVE SOCIAL AND ECONOMIC CHANGES IN THE SOCIETY WE LIVE IN and in our own life and work.
In our view, one of the main obstacles to cultural change is the representation of women in the media, which influences our perception of reality and affects the lifestyles we adopt.
Gender differences, often imposed by cultural norms, are experienced as a limitation linked to predefined roles and presumed innate behaviors: both women and men find themselves trapped and caged in culturally defined roles.
THE ABSTRACT CONCEPT OF THE FEMALE GENDER IMPOSED BY SOCIETY AND CONVEYED BY MEDIA DISTORTS YOUNGER GENERATIONS’ EXPECTATIONS, often inducing women, overwhelmed by internalized prejudices, to feel not up to par and to self-censor the choice of scientific studies and following a scientific career path.
STEM Passion, by featuring female scientists, presents a new form of storytelling that reveals their identity, cultural dignity, and professional excellence. It highlights the increasingly broad and multifaceted roles women scientists play in today’s society. It aims to contribute to reshaping our collective imagination, expanding the symbolic resources available to individuals and communities. Through the cathartic power of images, it offers an opportunity for transformation and aims to trigger change.
